Search for a plumber in Thornton and most of what comes back is not from Thornton. That is not an accusation of dishonesty, it is a description of how the home-services web is built: a company writes one landing page per city, fills it with the city's name, and lets the search engine do the rest. The page is real. The local presence behind it frequently is not. We took nine of the operators publishing a Thornton page and looked up where each one's plumbing contractor registration is actually recorded in Colorado's licensee file. The answers were Denver, Broomfield, Boulder, Longmont, Highlands Ranch, Fort Lupton, Greeley and Keenesburg, which is a small town out on the eastern plains of Weld County. Not one of the nine is registered in Thornton. Every one of them will send a competent plumber to your house. None of them is a Thornton business, and a page that calls them Thornton's best plumbers is telling you something that is not true.
So we built this list backwards. Instead of asking which companies advertise in Thornton, we asked the state which companies are registered here. The Colorado Information Marketplace publishes the Division of Professions and Occupations licensee file as open data, and it can be queried directly. It holds 102 plumbing contractor registrations recorded at a Thornton address, of which 56 currently hold Active status, out of 3,131 Active plumbing contractor registrations statewide. That number is not something a landing page can manufacture, because it is the address a business gives the regulator that licenses it. From those 56 we removed the commercial and industrial mechanical houses, the new-construction subcontractors who never take a homeowner's call, a school district that carries its own registration for in-house work, and the many firms whose entire web presence is a directory profile someone else wrote. We also removed one long-registered Thornton firm with an entirely clean record for a reason worth spelling out, because it is the sharp end of this page’s method: its website turned out to be a shell. A few hundred characters of visible text, no address, no phone, no licence numbers, and not one mention of the company’s own name anywhere in the body of the page. A business that cannot be confirmed from its own website cannot be confirmed at all, and a list built on documents has no business carrying it. We also removed every registration carrying a disciplinary entry. Three of the 56 Active registrations have a disciplinary case number attached in the same file, two of them stipulations and one a letter of admonition, and a fourth Thornton plumbing registration holds Active with Conditions status rather than plain Active, under a 2024 stipulation. Six companies survived.
One further test did most of the sorting, and it is worth knowing about because it is the law rather than our preference. Since 1 July 2025, Colorado has required every plumbing contractor to display two numbers on its vehicles, its billing materials, its bid sheets and its website: the contractor's own Colorado registration identification number, and the registration number of the master plumber attached to it. That single sentence turns a Colorado plumbing company's website into a compliance document. You can check it in ten seconds without picking up the phone, and so did we. Of the six firms below, one publishes both numbers exactly as the state records them. One publishes the contractor number alone. Four publish neither. That is the weakest showing we have measured anywhere on the Front Range: the same test returned four of seven in Aurora and two of six in Westminster. We have said which is which in every entry, and we have printed what the state file records for each company whether it published the numbers or not, because the record exists either way and a reader is entitled to it.
How We Evaluated Thornton Plumbing Companies
The Top 6 Plumbers in Thornton
2026 Rankings · Thornton, Colorado
Just In Time Electrical and Plumbing
This is the only company on the page that meets the display requirement in full, and it meets it without ambiguity. The site publishes three Colorado numbers in the format the state uses: electrical contractor licence EC.101536, plumbing contractor registration PC.0005181, and master plumber licence MP.03001703. All three resolve. The plumbing registration is Active, was first issued on 15 July 2024, and is recorded at Thornton 80233. The master licence belongs to Gerard C. Hallaren, is Active, and was first issued on 22 May 2024. The electrical licence is Active and was first issued on 16 May 2019, also recorded at Thornton 80233. None of the three carries a disciplinary entry. Confirming all of it took under two minutes, which is the entire argument for the statute, and no other Thornton-registered plumbing company made it that easy.
One distinction is worth drawing carefully, because the dates invite a wrong reading. The plumbing contractor registration is two years old. The business is not. The electrical licence recorded at the same Thornton suite has been Active since 2019, and the company describes itself as having served Thornton and the north metro since 2007, which is consistent with a long-established electrical contractor that added a licensed plumbing arm and registered it when it did. A reader should understand the 2024 date as the age of the plumbing registration rather than the age of the firm. The office is a real suite on East 104th Avenue, in the older Adams County core of the city rather than out in the new subdivisions, and the work list is the ordinary residential one: water heater replacement, water filtration and softeners, fixture and faucet installs, disposals, leak repair, drain clearing and toilet replacement, alongside the electrical side. The company advertises a 4.9 rating across more than a thousand verified reviews, and its Yelp file carries 63. Service runs across Thornton, Northglenn, Westminster, Broomfield, Brighton, Arvada and Boulder.
303 Master Plumbing
303 Master Plumbing is halfway to compliance, and the half it has done is done correctly. The site prints its plumbing contractor number as PC5016, and PC.5016 is exactly right: Active in the state file, first issued on 27 November 2023, recorded at Thornton 80602, with no disciplinary entry against it. The company also publishes a full street address on East 136th Place, which sounds trivial until you notice how few of its competitors do. Of the six firms here, only two put a house number on their own website. That address sits in the newer far-north part of the city above 136th Avenue, in the Adams County section of Thornton rather than the Weld County strip further north.
What is missing is the second number, and in this case the gap is unusually easy to close. The site names Ryan Buell as owner. The state file records exactly one Active master plumber of that name: MP.600023, Ryan D. Buell, Active since 10 April 2013, with the licence recorded at a Broomfield address. We are naming it as an identification rather than a certification, because the company has not published the number and only the company can confirm which master licence is attached to the registration. That is the correction owed here: the contractor number is already on the site, the master number is not, and the statute asks for both. Everything else reads straight. The company states 21 years of plumbing experience, which is consistent with a master licence held since 2013 and a business registered in 2023, and it says it is trusted by more than 500 local homeowners. Work is the ordinary residential set: bathroom repairs, faucet installation, water heater installation and emergency calls, across Thornton, Northglenn, Broomfield, Westminster, Erie and Lafayette.
To the T Plumbing and Heating
This is the most deeply rooted company on the page, and the documentary evidence for that is unusual enough to state plainly. Plumbing contractor registration PC.3975 is Active, was first issued on 22 March 2019, and is recorded at Thornton 80602. The master plumber licence behind it, MP.3000640, held by Nathan David Trail, is Active, was first issued on 2 December 2020, and is also recorded at Thornton 80602. Both halves of the credential, the business registration and the individual licence, point at the same ZIP code as the office on Syracuse Street. Nothing else in this roster matches that, and no amount of landing-page optimisation can manufacture it. The same licence holder appears in the file earlier still: journeyworker licence JP.290173 was issued to him at the same Thornton ZIP in January 2011, which puts a fifteen-year local licensing trail behind the business rather than a recently registered name.
The company is family owned by Nate and Megan Trail, dates itself to 2005, and works plumbing, heating, cooling and electrical under one roof. Its plumbing book is the full residential one: water heater repair and replacement, leak detection, sewer maintenance and repair, sump pumps and wells, drain cleaning, fixture replacement and plumbing remodels, disposals and backflow testing, with round-the-clock emergency cover. Its public review record is the largest on this page by a wide margin, with third-party aggregation reporting roughly 539 reviews and a separate Yelp file of 25. It ranks third rather than first for the reason this page keeps returning to. It publishes neither licence number. We checked the homepage, the plumbing services page and the Thornton location page, and no PC or MP number appears on any of them, which leaves a company with the best licensing position in the city failing a requirement it could satisfy in an afternoon. One further disclosure a reader is owed: this company also leads our Thornton HVAC ranking. That page assesses its heating and cooling work and this entry assesses its plumbing side, and the two judgements were made separately on separate evidence.
Amazing Plumbing Solutions
Amazing Plumbing Solutions is the middle case on this page in almost every respect, and it is here because the middle of a verified field is still a long way ahead of an unverified one. Plumbing contractor registration PC.4045 is Active, was first issued on 16 July 2019, and is recorded at Thornton 80229, giving it seven years of continuous registration and no disciplinary entry. The 80229 ZIP is the south-western corner of Thornton along the Thornton Parkway corridor, close to the Federal Heights and Northglenn boundaries, which is worth knowing because a Thornton mailing address in that area does not always mean a City of Thornton address, and the permitting authority changes with the line.
The site is live and names the business, and the service list is the ordinary residential and light commercial one: leak repair, pipe cleanouts, water heater installation, drain cleaning and sewer line replacement, with emergency availability. Two things hold it at fourth. It publishes neither licence number, so it does not meet the display requirement, and we located the registration by company name in the state file rather than from anything the company told us. And it publishes no street address either, which means a reader has no way to confirm from the site alone that the business is where it says it is. Set against that, the public review record is respectable rather than thin, running a little above 4.5 stars across roughly four dozen reviewers, and its stated service area reaches well beyond the north metro to Boulder and Castle Rock, which is a wide footprint for a firm this size and worth asking about if your job needs several return visits.
Drip Fix Plumbing
Drip Fix Plumbing is the specialist entry, and the specialisation suits the water it is working with. Alongside ordinary repair work it concentrates on treatment: water softeners, whole-house filtration and reverse osmosis systems, as well as tankless and conventional water heater installation. Hard water is the standard complaint of the north metro, so a plumbing firm that leads with softeners and filtration is answering a real and local demand rather than padding a service list. The company's registration corroborates its stated age rather than merely echoing it: plumbing contractor registration PC.4890 is Active, was first issued on 2 June 2023, and is recorded at Thornton 80241, which matches the 2023 founding the company gives.
Three things place it fifth. The site publishes no licence numbers, which leaves it short of the display requirement and meant the registration had to be found by company name in the state file. It publishes no street address, only the city. And it describes its plumber as holding a master credential without printing the number, which is the formula that gives a reader nothing to check. The registration itself is clean, with no disciplinary entry, and the stated experience of the plumber behind it is longer than the three-year-old business would suggest, which is a normal pattern and a reasonable thing to advertise provided the reader understands which figure refers to the person and which to the company. Service runs across Thornton, Denver, Boulder and Aurora, and the company states 24-hour availability. This is the entry for a homeowner with a water quality problem rather than a burst pipe. Ask for the master plumber's number before work begins.
Apex Plumbing LLC
Apex Plumbing is the youngest business we are prepared to list, and a reader should weigh it on exactly that basis. Plumbing contractor registration PC.5623 is Active, is recorded at Thornton 80233, and was first issued on 23 January 2026, which makes it seven months old at the time of writing and the newest registration in this roster by more than two years. There is no disciplinary history against it, but there is also almost no history of any kind, and that cuts both ways: a clean file on a seven-month-old registration is not the same evidence as a clean file on a twenty-year-old one.
What earns it a place is that it does the two things most of the field above it does not. It publishes a real street address on Dexter Drive rather than a city name, and it describes a specific and plausible book of work rather than a generic one: drain clearing, leak repair, water heater and tankless installation, standalone tub sets, fixture updates, remodel plumbing and sewer lines, for residential and light commercial customers across Thornton and the Denver metro. The Dexter Drive address sits in the 80233 ZIP, in the established part of the city east of Washington Street, and it is a residential address, which is normal for an owner-operated shop and worth understanding as such rather than mistaking for a storefront. Two gaps hold it at sixth beyond its age. The site publishes neither licence number, so it does not meet the display requirement and the registration had to be located by company name. And there is effectively no public review file yet to weigh. This is the entry for a homeowner willing to take a reference-checked chance on a new local shop rather than one who wants a long record to read. Ask for both numbers, and ask for two references on work comparable to yours.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which two licence numbers should a Colorado plumber show me, and where?
Two: the plumbing contractor registration number issued to the business, and the registration number of the master plumber attached to that business. Since 1 July 2025, Colorado law has required both to appear on the contractor's vehicles, billing materials, bid sheets and website. That last item is the one that helps you most, because it means you can check a company before you ever pick up the phone. Open the site and look for a PC number and an MP number. If neither is there, the company has been missing a requirement that has been in force for over a year, which is worth a question even where the work is good. Thornton is where we have seen this tested hardest. Of the six firms on this page, one publishes both numbers, one publishes the contractor number alone, and four publish neither. Across the wider pool of Thornton-registered plumbing contractors the rate is far worse than that, because most of those firms publish no website at all.
Does a plumber need a City of Thornton licence as well as a state one?
Yes, and this catches people out because the two are separate things issued by separate bodies. Colorado's State Plumbing Board licenses the individual plumber and registers the contracting business. The City of Thornton separately requires a city contractor licence from everyone involved in the construction, alteration, remodelling, repairing and equipping of buildings and structures, in the installation of underground utilities, and in work on city-owned water, sewer and storm drainage facilities. Holding a valid state licence does not exempt a contractor from the city licence, and neither does holding a licence from a reciprocating jurisdiction or an International Code Council certification. A homeowner working on their own primary residence is not treated as a contractor and does not need one. City contractor licence applications and renewals are made online through Thornton's CityView portal. Before you hire, ask whether the company is licensed with the City of Thornton, not merely licensed by the state.
What plumbing work needs a permit in Thornton, and which codes apply?
More than most homeowners expect. The city states that a building permit is required any time you erect, construct, enlarge, remodel, alter, repair, move, improve, remove, convert, demolish or change the occupancy of any building, structure or utility, and that plumbing permits are required for all plumbing work. Its own examples include water service, sewer replacement, drains, sprinkler systems, water heaters, water softener systems, and related fixtures and appliances. A water heater swap is a permitted job in Thornton, which surprises people every year. Permits are applied for through the CityView portal, inspections are booked online or through the inspection request line, and Building Inspections can be reached on 303-538-7250. On codes, there is a change worth knowing about if your project spans the year: Thornton has adopted the 2024 International Codes, effective 1 July 2026, and the 2026 National Electrical Code, effective 1 August 2026.
What is the difference between a master plumber, a journeyworker and a plumbing contractor in Colorado?
The first two are individual licences issued to people; the third is a registration issued to a business. Colorado licenses residential plumbers, journeyworker plumbers and master plumbers through the State Plumbing Board, and the classes are separated by documented practical experience and examination. The statute caps the experience the board may require at 3,400 hours for a residential plumber's licence, 6,800 hours for a journeyworker plumber's licence and 8,500 hours for a master plumber's licence. A plumbing contractor registration belongs to the company, and a registered contractor must have a responsible master plumber attached to it. That is precisely why the display law asks for two numbers rather than one: one tells you the business is registered, the other tells you which licensed master stands behind it. A firm that advertises only that it is licensed and insured, with no number attached, has given you nothing you can look up.
How do I check a Thornton plumber's licence myself?
Ask for the contractor registration number and the master plumber number, or read them off the website where the company is complying with the display requirement. The State Plumbing Board's own lookup is the official route but it blocks automated queries, so the practical public route is the Colorado Information Marketplace, which publishes the same records as the Professional and Occupational Licenses in Colorado dataset. Anyone can search it by name or number in a browser. What you want to see is a status of Active. The file also records Expired, Revoked, Suspended, Voluntary Surrender, Active with Restrictions, Active with Conditions, and a status meaning the registration cannot practise until it hires a master. It carries disciplinary case numbers, the action taken and effective dates where they exist. This matters in Thornton specifically: among the Active Thornton plumbing contractor registrations, three carry a disciplinary case in the file, and the wider Thornton record includes a revocation followed by voluntary surrender and two cease and desist orders. None of the six companies on this page has any disciplinary entry.

Our Recommendation
Just In Time Electrical and Plumbing is the pick, and it wins on evidence rather than on preference. It is the only Thornton-registered plumbing company we found that publishes both licence numbers the law requires, both of them resolve exactly as printed, and the electrical licence recorded at the same Thornton suite has been Active since 2019, which puts a documented history behind a plumbing registration that is only two years old. Nothing else in this field is that easy to verify. If you want a second name, 303 Master Plumbing is the alternative: it publishes an accurate contractor number and a real street address, and the only thing standing between it and full compliance is a master plumber number it has not printed. Where a job crosses plumbing and heating together, To the T Plumbing and Heating is the one to ring: it is the only company here whose contractor registration and whose master plumber licence are both recorded at a Thornton address, and it carries by far the largest public review file on this page, though you will have to ask for the numbers because it does not print them. For a water quality problem specifically, Drip Fix Plumbing is the better call than any of them.
Whoever you call, ask three questions before a truck is dispatched. What is your plumbing contractor registration number, and what is your responsible master plumber's licence number? Colorado has required both on the company website since July 2025, both are public records, and both take a minute to check against the state's open licensee file. Are you licensed with the City of Thornton, and not merely with the state? The city requires its own contractor licence, and a state licence does not substitute for it. And will you pull the permit? Thornton requires one for water service, sewer replacement, drains, water heaters and softeners, and a contractor who treats that as optional is telling you something about how the rest of the job will go.
